The Biogeek is edited and authored by Peter Larson. I’m a husband to a wonderful wife, a father of three awesome little kids, and a recovering academic with a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. After working for ten years as a professor at a small college in New Hampshire, I decided to leave higher education to blog full-time (I write a running blog called Runblogger.com). Though financially rewarding, it didn’t take long for me to realize that professional blogging was not my true calling. I missed being in the classroom. I missed seeing the light bulb turn on when a student begins to understand a difficult concept. I missed the daily opportunity to truly make a difference in a young person’s life. Teaching feeds my soul in a way that sitting in front of a computer screen all day does not.
In the Fall of 2015 I re-embraced my passion for teaching by enrolling in the teacher certification program at the Upper Valley Educator’s Institute in Lebanon, NH. I interned for the school year at Bedford and Merrimack Valley High Schools. I had a blast, and the experience re-affirmed for me that I belong in the classroom. This Fall I begin a new career as a teacher at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy in Northwood, NH. I hope to use this site as a place to write about my experiences, to geek out about cool things in science, and to share teaching resources I have developed over the years.
